Film & TV Language: Sound video feedback and learner response

1) Type up your feedback from your teacher.

WWW:
  • Very appropriate images
  • Contrapuntal is very effective - makes images more dramatic.
  • Two sets of images - Painting/drama -> Fighting (continual theme)
  • Appropriate time period
  • Powerful music
EBI:
  • Editing is too fast  (for first section)
  • Smooth transition

2) Type up your feedback from fellow students - you can summarise key points if several students give you similar feedback.

WWW:
  • Good brief
  • Clear contrast
  • Appropriate time period
  • Modern v Old - Good idea
  • Comedic effect
EBI
  • Slow down pace
  • Smooth transition
  • Better quality images
3) Now reflect on your work and write your own evaluation of your video. Write a 'What went well' (WWW) paragraph and a paragraph for 'Even Better If' (EBI) underneath the rest of your feedback.

 WWW:

I think that my ideas were clear, and effective in showing the effect of sounds on images/videos and vice versa. Moreover, my ideas were connected all throughout even including the contrapuntal half, showcasing the romantic, elegant eras, compared the extremely violent modern era with music that brings out the difference in this.

EBI:

I think that I could have maybe spent more time, and delved more into the details of the technical aspects, in terms of the post production and editing, rather than my ideas. For example, transitions between photos and improving pace, which combined with my ideas could have made a more well rounded project all over.

4) Learner response: compare your own video against your evaluation of the top three videos in the class. Whose did you think was best and why? How could you have improved your own video?

  • Olivia, Raagni/Antonia, and Dennis's were really good and powerful, but I particularly enjoyed Olivia's project because not only were her ideas well implemented as shown in her video, through the similar but different halves. further emphasising the effect of sound on the images and vice versa. In the technical aspect of things, she was also more advanced by bringing personality to the video through the intro, and the transitions which were appropriate.
  • I think to improve my work I could have spent more time on the attention to detail when working on the post production because I think my ideas were well constructed already, and could have been made stronger had it been supported by strong editing, making a well rounded video.

5) Finally, what have you learned about the importance of sound to film and TV through this week's work?

I learnt that sound can have a big effect on what the audience is watching by completely contrasting  it, or embodying the scene or images. For example, a murderous, gruesome scene could be accompanied by serious, heavy, rough music, making the scene even more so, compared to if it was accompanied by a pop song, giving it a comedic effect, creating a stark contrast which changes the perception of the scene from audiences.
