The Guardian - Deutschland 83 Pity the Germans don't like it
1) Find one positive aspect and one criticism of Deutschland 83 in the reviews.
- Deutschland 83’s first episode of eight was the most-watched foreign-language drama in UK history.
- Though very much an international package, it has been a bigger comparative hit abroad than at home. Massive hype only generated 3 million viewers for its co-maker RTL (just above the channel’s average).
- It doesn’t just make the viewer empathise with a Stasi agent on a human level – in the way The Lives of Others did – it makes us engage with the socialist regime’s worldview, in which a military exercise in West Germany poses a potentially existential threat.
2) Why does the second Guardian article suggest the Germans didn't like the show?
And to top it all, the peace movement in the west turns out to have been infiltrated not just by Soviet agents, but gay Soviet agents at that – a McCarthyite fantasy come true. In Germany, where the cold war can still send chills, that feels a bit too simple.

2) The Channel 4 News interview is conducted in German with English subtitles. How does this reflect Channel 4's remit as a public service broadcaster and their target audience? (Clue: revise your work on Channel 4 and Public Service Broadcasting here!)
Channel 4's remit is to provide "high quality innovative content which challenges the status-quo". One way they do this is through airing foreign language films, this interview being in German emphasises the uniqueness of C4 compared to the BBC.
3) Interviewer Matt Frei asks about the current political situation in Germany. Why might this interest a Channel 4 audience?

1) How did she use the historical context and real-life events to create a successful drama?
They used the timeline of real events and the real political climate of the time
as a backdrop, and set our fictional characters free in that space. We’re seeing the world through the eyes of our protagonist, so the style of the storytelling and the style of the execution are deliberately heightened.
2) Anna Winger discusses the use of music. Why might the soundtrack attract an audience?
It creates nostalgia and familiarity helping to attract an older audience, ones who can maybe even relate to the time period and/or the events.

Neon, bright colours which are eye catching.

3) Why might the distributors Freemantle International have used different marketing campaigns in different countries?
They want to provide different representations to each country that apply to their views/beliefs/experiences. For example, Germans would think of the cold war differently to Americans, so they would campaign it to accurately depict their views/beliefs/experiences as so to appeal to audiences there. For Germany it's a dark time of history, but for America and it's NATO allies a time of triumph.
